Baby Massage

I am a fully qualified IAIM Infant Massage Instructor who will come to your home to teach you how to massage your baby.

What is “Infant Massage”?
Massage is a loving, nurturing activity that parents can practice with their child on a daily basis.  Ideally, parents should give the massage, but when this is not possible, grandparents or primary care givers can do it just as well.  Massaging relaxes and calms mind, body and soul, for the person giving and for the little person receiving.

Although infant massaging has been a tradition in many cultures and for many centuries, it is fairly new in South Africa and other western countries. There is truly no substitute for learning to massage your baby with the benefits including improvement of blood circulation and digestion, better sleep patterns, reduction of colic and above of all, it supports the bonding process.

Benefits of Infant Massage
The benefits are many; some are scientific and many are subtle, all are important in the development of a healthy and happy baby.  There are four main categories: interaction, stimulation, relief and relaxation.  Examples of each, are:

Interaction includes: promotion of bonding and attachment, assists verbal and non-verbal communication, undivided (one-on-one) attention is given, all five senses are used, love and respect is shown towards the child... and more.

Stimulation of: the baby’s digestive and elimination systems, immune system, activating the lymphatic system, improving respiration (good if there is excess mucus), vestibular system (ie. coordination and balance), muscular development and tone, mind-body awareness... and more.

Relief with: constipation and elimination, gas and colic, abdominal cramps, growing pains, teething discomfort, over-sensitivity to touch... and many more.

Relaxation through: improved sleep patterns (for baby and parents), increased flexibility, helps with coping mechanisms (also, helps with ‘self-regulation’, when baby learns the ability to calm him/herself), regulates behavioral states, keeps baby calm, increased dopamine, reduced stress hormones (eg. cortisol and norepinephrin), allows for positive ‘time out’ time with parents.
